Young Entrepreneur Cracks The Cleaning Market
Rishav Juglall is no ordinary young man! He started Rocky Brands at the tender age of 21 because he was absolutely determined to become an entrepreneur. The business is now poised to celebrate its 10th birthday in 2021.
“When I started, I used my youthful resilience to my business’s advantage because I kept phoning prospects until I got a ‘yes’. From the beginning, I’ve treated everything associated with my business on a professional footing and now I’m starting to reap the rewards of this attitude,” explained Juglall.
Rocky Brands has established an excellent reputation for supplying the best cleaning products possible thanks to a deal with US-based brand Weiman. “In 2012 I was awarded the dealership to import Weiman products. They are of such high quality that my business immediately started growing very strongly. By 2015, I was able to start producing the range locally, only importing raw materials,” he commented.
The Rocky Brands manufacturing plant is based in Durban, close to the port. “At times the logistics between KZN and Gauteng cause delays for customers so my goal is to establish a decanting, packaging and labelling operation in Riversands Commercial Park when I graduate from Riversands Incubation Hub,” said Juglall.
Customers include Makro, Spar, Builder’s Warehouse, Pick n Pay and House & Home. The business also deals with clients such as Bidvest Prestige, which has contracts to clean casinos and gyms.
“Of course our products have experienced strong demand since the economy has started opening up after the hard lockdown,” he remarked.
The business also supplies Wright’s Fine Metal Polish which is locally manufactured and has introduced another line of cleaning products under the brand name Oakmont which includes an eco-friendly stainless steel polish which the CSIR helped to develop. This range has a lower price point and only contains 22 – 26% imported raw materials.
In 2016 Juglall won a national entrepreneur competition and was enrolled in Raizcorp’s incubator programme for two years between 2017 and 2019. He developed a cleaning glove He developed an innovative cleaning glove which has proved to be so popular that it was worth his while to set up a production facility to churn out these silicon gloves.
“Silicon has a lower plastic content and I have a specialist formulation. The glove is very handy to use around the house,” said Juglall.
There is no question that this focused young Riversands entrepreneur is set to continue to build his business successfully as he develops new products and works on import replacements.
